Hear The Band Again.

You’ve got a bead on a good band that you may have heard about or you saw at that wedding reception you attended last year (but you weren’t quite paying all that much attention to them then). Now you’re seriously shopping around and you and your fiance want see and hear them again ”live”. O.k., you call your friend and find out more about them and you call them. What do you do now?

Find out who the band’s agent or leader is and contact them.
Ask where they are performing next that may be an event similar to yours.
They will get permission from the venue AND the client.
Once you get the green light to attend, dress to “blend in” with the other guests.
Don’t stay long.
Remember that the Band or DJis there for THAT client and may be doing exactly what is expected of them at the very time you are there.

This is not a good time to engage the band’s members or the leader with questions. It is best to save that for the following week on the phone so that they have your undivided attention. A Really Big Show…Really!

Ed Sullivan, T.V.’s Sunday night impresario for over 25 years, used to say,” Tonight we have a really Big Show!” If you were lucky enough like comedian Jay Leno to get an opportunity to appear in the Sullivan show line-up; if successful, your career took off like a bottle rocket into the “over night success” category. People like The Beatles, Elvis and the Stones became a part of the American lexicon overnight practically.

I married my iPhone!

I recently joined the “smart phone” world and decided to go all out and purchase a new iPhone 4S. Being that I was a new smart phone user I was swept off my feet by the functionality and beauty of the iPhone. I had no other previous loves to compare it to, but I knew right when I had it in my hand it was love at first grip!

I talk to my phone like it is my own personal assistant and there are new wonderful things I found out each day about it. I can get emails done, texts by voice, look up the closest restaurant to me, and set my alarm for the morning with one press of a button. It’s the perfect match for me and now that I have found this new passion for my “smart phone” my boyfriend notices that he probably never should have encouraged the notion to begin with. I just smile at him letting him know where my true love resides.

Finding the perfect special event and wedding entertainment is like making a commitment to a new smart phone where everything you want and expect is right in front of you. There is no doubt in my mind that one of the main reasons I still perform music and represent uber talented people today is that I get such a kick out of meeting new people – especially famous ones. Call me starstruck if you want but from the late President Nixon to singer Tom Jones, the list is quite long.

Of course I’ve had some near misses meeting great people too! I was in London for a brief visit just days before my cousin could have given me a chance to meet The Beatles! He was assigned to cater to their needs on staff at a hotel where the group frequently held press conferences and meetings. Tony Bennett cancelled an appearance on – 9/11 no less – in Dalton, GA. My Blue Sky Jazz trio performed that evening for their cocktail hour in the spacious Dalton Convention Center. They booked Natalie Cole to sing in Mr. Bennett’s stead at the last minute! So, missed Mr. Bennett and was not fortunate to meet Ms. Cole.

The bottom line is that I can’t wait until tomorrow because there may be someone out there searching for a start in this business who has the talent, calls Blue Sky Atlanta Music & Entertainment and, who knows, maybe they will the next Michael Jackson or Madonna! I was speaking with a well-respected, successful restaurateur who told me that he raised his kids with the mantra “the harder you work the luckier you become!” -jt

Have That Employee Party!

You’re lucky! You’ve got wonderfully loyal, hard-working employees. But, there’s always an excuse to put off or not even have that employee appreciation party. This year, especially this year, you should book that space, invite the people who mean so much to you and your success, tell them to bring their spouses and allow them to kick back and enjoy a relaxed evening.

This year you will find great deals from hotels on their space facilities to caterers and entertainment companies who want present their best and likely will throw in some sweet offers. Once you decide on the number of people who plan on coming, proposals will be quickly drawn up for you. Once you’ve checked the references, you are ready to make your decision. But, there is more to think about. A solo pianist for the cocktail hour is always a great start. The variety dance band or an interactive DJ will likely be the next consideration.

It’s important to keep in mind that most Atlanta music bands today have the capability of providing their clients with a DJ-like format as well as their own performance. Magicians are always fun to start off the night, too! And , cash bars are a must. But the most important thing is that your people know that the management cares.

So, don’t put off that party this year! Show your prized people that you’re glad they are on your team and value them highly! While you are at it, enjoy them enjoying themselves in an outside the office setting. -jt

Rare Find A Pianist With Beauty and Skill

Talk about a blue sky day, when the lovely Diana Pand contacted and asked us to check her performance skills on the piano, that is exactly what we did. After listening to her play, we were presently surprised to meet a charming woman that has it all going for her.

I am always on the look out for and excited to find a new pianist musician/entertainer to represent. and already Diana has performed for Blue Sky Atlanta Music & Entertainment for a corporate engagement – and she knocked the ball out of the park for us. There is always room for another good performer. Wedding ceremonies, receptions and cocktail hours at local country clubs is ideal for her.

Diana has a wonderful repertoire. She performs selections from Light Classics to romantic Ballads, Show Tunes and popular and love and movie Themes. Her “can do, willing to please” attitude puts her at the top of our roster for “rare find of the year”! I guess you could say that I am a fan.

Piano Bar Viewpoints

Most Musicians notice most everything that goes on around them as they perform. It has always been an added pleasure to watch and enjoy couples, for example, enjoying each others compnay at the piano bar or watch the couple dancing (who rarely do) out on the dance having the time of their lives.

Some of the people you meet across a piano bar are quite diverse and can be very interesting. I remember playing one evening in Atlanta’s erstwhile Carbo’s Cafe Piano bar. Early in the night, a lone gentleman ordered a Remy Martin. He finished his drink in a few minutes time and, before he left, came up to the piano and told he how much he’d enjoyed my choice of piano music. I, of course thanked him and as he turned to leave he put his business card face down on the piano. I had forgotten the card was there and at the end of the night I picked it up, turned it over and the card read Brian Dyson, President – Coca-Cola, USA.

Now I don’t get to meet many CEOs however, it is nice when I do. It is really true that yuo never know who is out there listening to you or reading this! So the next time you see a solo musician or a group in a public setting. It is likely that he is noticing you as much as you are noticing him.

Dueling pianos are great fun. If the right pianist-vocalists are used to working with each other, it can really be a treat. I remember one year Steve Carey and I performed for Red Baron’s Antiques in Atlanta for one of their auction preview parties. That evening was a lot of fun.

Thanksgiving turkey and music

One of my favorite holidays of the entire year is fast approaching. Thanksgiving was first proclaimed a national holiday by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. His actions helped soothe the country weary of civil war by drawing their attention and thoughts to not what may have been lost, but what people had left and be thankful.

I have been invited to perform solo piano for one of Atlanta most exclusive, private country clubs this Thanksgiving. And, I am really looking forward to that event. People come dress to the nines with their whole families in tow. I pick out the most variety I can think of at the time. Sometimes a table will ask for a certain request or an artist that they enjoy and I always happy to oblige.

I can recall some terrific food presentations for Thanksgiving Brunch over the last 25 years. 103 West, Hotel Nikko – now the Grand Hyatt, the Atlanta National Golf Club, to name a few, have had specatular varieties for their guests with their chefs beaming with pride.
